Overnight stays and total revenue had a year-on-year increase, above national average

Initial estimates for October 2016 show an increase in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+13.5%), total revenue (+22.7%) and lodging revenue (+20.3%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at +12.4% in nights spent, +19.8% in total revenue and +21.3% in revenue from accommodation.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira topped 642.5 thousand – a new all-time record for the month of October. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation also registered new maximums (34.0 and 21.3 million euros, respectively).

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that for the reference month, the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were +30.0% and +11.9%, respectively. The German market grew by 16.1%, while the British market rose by 11.0%.

In the first ten months of 2016, the overnight stays increased by 9.5% when compared to the same period of 2015, while the growth in total revenue (+16.7%) and lodging revenue (+17.8%) was more pronounced.

The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 70.6%, up by 6.3 percentage points from the year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +17.6%, increasing to € 48.97.
