In November 2017

Overnight stays increased by 3.4% year-on-year, with a significant contribution of the Portuguese market (+34.1%)

Initial estimates for November 2017 show an increase in the tourism indicators, with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+3.4%), total revenue (+9.3%) and lodging revenue (+12.9%).

At the country level, the rates of change stood at 8.8% in nights spent, 15.5% in total revenue and 17.4% in revenue from accommodation.

In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 524.0 thousand. The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation reached 26.2 and 16.9 million euros, respectively. 

Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by foreign tourists and the Portuguese were +1.1% and +34.1%, respectively, compared to November 2016. The British (-8.2%) and German (-0.6%) markets had a negative performance, while the French market increased by 55.2%.

In the first eleven months of 2017, the overnight stays rose by 2.0% when compared to the same period of 2016, while the growth in total revenue (+7.8%) and lodging revenue (+8.9%) was more pronounced.

The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 61.7%, 0.3 percentage points higher than a year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.

The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +10.4%, increasing to € 41.20.
