[NOTE: Regarding the monthly publication of Tourism data for the year 2019, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) will keep in broad lines the model followed in the previous year. However, it should be noted that Statistics Portugal (INE) starts from the reference month of January 2019 onwards to disseminate data for an aggregate comprising hotel, rural/lodging tourism and local accommodation with 10 or more beds (in terms of accommodation capacity), thus closely following the model implemented by DREM at the beginning of 2018. In Madeira, DREM also surveys the local accommodation under 10 beds, so in this press release and in the tables published by this Regional Directorate the overall total for guests and overnight stays is higher when compared to INE’s. For the bed and room occupancy rates and for revenue and personnel costs, the figures of DREM and INE are the same, since the local accommodation under 10 beds is not included in the compilation of these variables.]
In January 2019
Overnight stays and total revenue in the tourist accommodation sector of Madeira decreased
Initial estimates of tourism accommodation for January 2019 show a decrease in the number of overnight stays (-1.0%) and total revenue (-1.7%). Revenue from accommodation increased by 1.0%.
It should be noted that excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, overnight stays decrease by 2.5% year-on-year. In the country, on the other hand, overnight stays grew by 4.7%, while total revenue and revenue from accommodation increased by 8.7% and 8.2%, respectively.
In the month of reference, the number of overnight stays in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (considering all local accommodation) stood at 530.3 thousand. Total revenue and revenue from accommodation amounted to 25.1 and 16.8 million euros, respectively.
The overnight stays in hotel establishments dropped by 2.9% year-on-year and were responsible for 83.6% of the total, while the overnight stays in local lodging increased by 10.9% compared to the same month of the previous year and accounted for 14.9% of the total. In turn, rural tourism, which represented 1.5% of the total, registered a 3.0% increase in overnight stays.
Looking at the data broken down by market, there was an increase in the British market (+1.5%), while the French and German markets showed changes of -23.8% and -2.6% compared to January 2018, respectively. The Portuguese market partially mitigated the drop of non-resident tourists (-3.0%), rising by 19.7%.
The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 47.3%, dropping by 3.8 percentage points over the same month of the previous year, but remained as the highest among Portuguese NUTS II regions. In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 53.4%.
The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of -3.8%, decreasing to € 34.16. The average daily rated (ADR) increased by 3.3% in January 2019, to € 64.02.
