Despite the slight recovery from the previous month, the number of overnight stays was about one third when compared to September 2019
According to the flash estimate, in September 2020, the tourist accommodation sector registered 53.7 thousand guests and 265.4 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -58.4% and -65.9%, respectively (-59.7% and -70.9% in August, by the same order). It should be noted that excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 66.9% compared to September 2019, a more pronounced drop than in the country (-53.4%).
Overnight stays from residents in Portugal decreased by 17.3% (-19.1% in August) reaching 95.2 thousand and corresponding to 35.9% of the total, while those from non-residents fell by 74.3% (-81.7% in the previous month), standing at 170.2 thousand. The guest flow of residents in Portugal reached a total of 27.5 thousand, decreasing by 10.9% (-5.1% in August) with non-resident guests estimated at 26.2 thousand, a year-on-year decline of 73.3% (-78.7% in the previous month). In the country, overnight stays from residents decreased by 8.5% (-2.1% in August) reaching 2.0 million and corresponding to 57.2% of the total, while those from non-residents dropped by 71.9% (-72.0% in the previous month), standing at 1.5 million.
The main non-resident markets continued to show a significant decrease in September. The French market recorded the sharpest drop with -83.4% (-82.8% in August), followed by the German market which fell 71.8% (-71.3%). The British market showed some recovery compared to the previous month (the number of overnight stays went up by 26.2 thousand compared to August), although it still registered a drop of 69.6% (-83.9% in the previous month).
In September, 50.4% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not receive any guests (50.6% in August). However, in the reference month, the hotel sector had 68.9% of the establishments with guest flow (66.9% in August).
