Overnight stays in tourist accommodation were higher than in September, although with a year-on-year significant decrease
According to the flash estimate, in October 2020, the tourist accommodation sector registered 57.3 thousand guest arrivals and 285.8 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -52.1% and -58.4%, respectively (-57.6% and -65.1% in September, by the same order). For the first time in this century, the number of overnight stays increased from September to October. The overnight stays in the reference month surpassed the August figure for the first time since the beginning of the time series (1976).
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 59.2% compared to October 2019, a less drop than in the country (-63.0%).
Overnight stays from residents in Portugal decreased by 8.7% (-13.1% in September) reaching 73.4 thousand and corresponding to 25.7% of the total, while those from non-residents fell by 64.9% (-74.1% in the previous month), standing at 212.5 thousand. The guest flow of residents in Portugal reached a total of 24.3 thousand, decreasing by 8.1% (-7.9% in September) with non-resident guests estimated at 33.0 thousand, a year-on-year decline of 60.8% (-73.2% in the previous month). In the country, overnight stays from residents decreased by 21.0% (-8.5% in September) reaching 1.2 million and corresponding to 51.1% of the total, while those from non-residents dropped by 76.2% (-71.9% in the previous month), standing at 1.2 million.

In the Region, the main non-resident issuing markets registered some recovery, despite the persistence of substantial decreases. The French market recorded the sharpest drop, with -80.2% overnight stays (-83.5% in September), followed by the German market with -67.7% (-71.6%). The British market showed a decline of less than 50%, -46.6% (-69.4% in the previous month), with the number of overnight stays increasing by 34.4 thousand.
In October, as in the previous month, 50.4% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector counted 72.2% of the establishments with a guest flow (68.9% in September).
