Only 82.1 thousand overnight stays were recorded in the tourism accommodation sector of Madeira
According to the flash estimate, in March 2021, the tourist accommodation sector registered 19.7 thousand guest arrivals and 82.1 thousand overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year rates of change of -70.7% and -75.1%, respectively (-88.3% and -90.0% in February, by the same order).
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 79.9% compared to March 2020, a larger drop than in the country (-66.5%).
Overnight stays from residents in Portugal decreased by 9.1% (-72.4% in January) reaching 33.1 thousand and corresponding to 40.3% of the total, while those from non-residents fell by 83.3% (-92.2% in the previous month), standing at 49.1 thousand. The guest flow of residents in Portugal reached a total of 11.5 thousand, increasing by 7.7% (-67.0% in February) with non-resident guests estimated at 7.1 thousand, a year-on-year decline of 82.4% (-94.4% in the previous month).
In the country, in March 2021, overnight stays from residents decreased by 20.2% (-74.9% in February), reaching 452.1 thousand, representing 71.1% of the total, while those of non-residents declined by 86,2% (-94.5% in the previous month), standing at 184.0 thousand.

In the Region, the main non-resident issuing markets registered substantial decreases in overnight stays in this month. The British market recorded the sharpest drop, with -93.1% in overnight stays (-95.9% in February), followed by the German market with -86.8% (-92.2%) and the French market with -72.3% (-89.5% in the previous month).
In March, 59.9% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector counted 41.9% of the establishments with a guest flow (42.6% in February).
The detailed results for March 2021 will be published on May 14th of 2021.
