Number of overnight stays was much higher than a year-ago, but substantially lower than in April 2019
The flash estimate of the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for April 2021 shows that 27.9 thousand guests were registered generating 126.1 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of 33 095.2% and 3 014.9%, respectively. This extremely pronounced growth when compared to April 2020, is due to the fact that in this particular month the tourism activity was virtually non-existent, with the number of guests standing at 84 and the number of overnight stays at 4.0 thousand.
Comparing April 2021 with April 2019, there is a huge drop of 77.7% in guests and 81.1% in overnight stays.
In the first four months of the year 2021, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered 388.9 thousand overnight stays (-73.3% than in the same month of 2020).
To compare the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds. In this case, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments shows a decrease of 77.7 %, a larger drop than in the country (-70.1%).
In the Region, overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 2 630.5% year-on-year, reaching 49.3 thousand and representing 39.1% of the total, while bednights from foreign residents went up by 3 323.9% compared to April 2020, standing at 76.8 thousand. Compared to April 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was -34.1%, while in the case of foreign residents it stood at -87.0%. The number of guests resident in Portugal was estimated at 16.3 thousand and the number of foreign guests was 11.6 thousand.
In the country, in April 2021, overnight stays from residents (weight of 70.6%) contributed with 668.1 thousand and non-residents with 278.7 thousand. Compared to April 2019, there was a decrease of 60.3% in overnight stays from residents in Portugal and of 93.5% in overnight stays from non-residents.

In the Region, the main non-resident issuing markets recorded some recovery in terms of overnight stays compared to the previous month. The German market accounted for 17.3 thousand in the reference month, followed by the United Kingdom with 6.2 thousand and France with 6.1 thousand.
In April, 54.4% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not have any guests. However, in the reference month, the hotel sector had 50.7% of the establishments with a guest flow (42.6% in March).
