In turn, in its releases, Statistics Portugal (INE) excludes local accommodation establishments under 10 beds. In this press release and in the tables published by DREM the overall total for guests and overnight stays is higher when compared to INE’s. For the bed and room occupancy rates and for revenue and personnel costs, the figures of DREM and INE are the same since the local accommodation under 10 beds is not included in the compilation of these variables.]

Overnight stays in tourist accommodation increased by 81.4% compared to 2020,  but stood below 2019 levels

The first estimates for December 2021 show that 74.4% of the tourist accommodation establishments had a guest flow (86.5% of the total tourist accommodation capacity). Hotel establishments showed the highest percentage of establishments which had guests (84.4%), followed by rural tourism establishments with 74.2% and local accommodation with 73.7%.

In the month of reference, there was an estimated total of 451.1 thousand overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing a very significant increase of 169.3% compared to the same month of the previous year (167.5 thousand overnight stays in 2020). It is important to note that, unlike the two previous months, the overnight stays in December 2021 did not exceed the values recorded in December 2019 (490.6 thousand overnight stays).

Excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, the overnight stays from tourist accommodation increased by 187.5% compared to December 2020, higher than that recorded in the country, which was 170.4%. Total income and income from accommodation also increased, in December 2021, at a higher proportion than overnight stays (192.0% and 195.1%, respectively). In the country, in the month of reference, total income and income from accommodation registered, in the same order, a growth of 187.2% and 202.2%.

Hotel establishments concentrated 77.5% of overnight stays, growing by 207.0% year-on-year. In turn, local lodging recorded an increase of 89.0%, comprising 20.3% of total overnight stays, while rural tourism only registered 2.2% of overnight stays, corresponding to an increase of 91.8%.

From January to December 2021, the overnight stays in total tourist accommodation in the Region rose by 81.4% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching around 5.0 million, but decreased by 38.7% compared to 2019.

In the main markets, in December 2021, there were quite sharp increases when compared to the same period of the previous year. The French market stood out, registering the highest growth of 244.0%, followed by the British and the German markets, with an increase of 125.1% and 108.4%, respectively. In the domestic market, overnight stays also increased compared to December 2020 (+135.4%). In the year of 2021, the main issuing markets also showed growth in this indicator, with the French market recording the most pronounced increase, of 133.3%, followed by the market for residents in Portugal, the United Kingdom and Germany, with a growth of 109.7%, 51.4% and 27.9%, respectively. It should be noted that, regarding the national market, an all-time high was recorded, surpassing the previous record value, of 2019, by 21.7%.

Comparing the reference period with December 2019 (pre-pandemic period), the activity in tourist accommodation showed a drop of 8.1% in overnight stays, with the market for residents abroad recording a decrease of 13.2%. Considering the main markets of this segment, there were negative changes in the British (-24.9%), French (-14.3%) and German (-6.8%) markets. The domestic market maintained the growth trend, which has been observed in recent months (+29.4% compared to December 2019). Comparing the sum of the year 2021 with 2019, it is observed that contrary to the national market, the foreign market shows a decrease (-47.3%), shared by the British (-45.7%), German (-56.8%) and French (-57.9%) markets.

The average stay in the total tourist accommodation, in December 2021, registered an increase compared to the same month of the previous year (4.93 nights), standing at 5.03 nights. In annual terms, this indicator stood at 4.87 nights, similar to the figure of 2020 (4.83 nights).

The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 38.6%, 18.9 percentage points over the same month of the previous year (19.7%). In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 44.7% (23.4% in December 2020). In annual terms, these indicators rose to 44.4% and 49.4%, respectively.

In December 2021, the average income per room (RevPAR) was 36.59 euros in all tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation under 10 beds), +105.1% than the same month of the previous year. Compared to the values ​​of December 2019, there was a 7.2% growth (34.15 euros in December 2019). RevPAR for 2021 stood at 38.73 euros (22.54 euros in 2020 and 44.29 euros in 2019).

In turn, the revenue per room used (ADR) in tourist accommodation rose from 76.35 euros in December 2020 to 81.87 euros in December 2021 (+7.2% year-on-year). In annual terms, the ADR reached an all-time high of 78.46 euros.

Number of rounds played on golf courses in the Region increased in 2021

The survey of golf courses reveals that 45,626 rounds were carried out in the three golf courses in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, between January and December 2021 (+21.9% than in the same period last year), with this activity generating around 1.9 million euros in revenues, +37.2% than in 2020. 65.7% of the rounds were made by non-members, mostly from the Nordic countries, Germany, the United Kingdom and Portugal. Hotel and related establishments sold 47.9% of the rounds, the golf courses sold directly 30.0% and the remaining 22.1% were transacted by tour operators. As with tourist accommodation, despite the growth compared to 2020, the number of rounds made, and the revenues remained below 2019 levels.

In 2021, the ports of the Region had more cruise ships than in 2020 but passengers in transit dropped

In 2021, according to data provided by the Administration of Ports of ARM, 125 cruise ships docked in ports of the Region (+78.6% than in 2020), up by 55 over 2020, but the number of transit passengers fell again to 113.8 thousand, -20.5% than in 2020.
