Flash estimate - In May 2022, the number of overnight stays increased by 25.7% compared to the same month in 2019
According to the flash estimate for May 2022 regarding the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, there were 177.6 thousand guest arrivals, generating 899.9 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +262.4% and +322.1%, respectively. Compared to May 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 32.9% and 25.7%.
It should also be noted that the above values of overnight stays and overnight guests, for May 2022, are the highest ever for this month of the year.
Comparing the regional data with the country’s, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments, there was an increase of 343.6%, a sharper change than the one recorded at a national level (+221.8%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 138.6% year-on-year, reaching 157.2 thousand and representing 17.5% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 404.1% compared to May 2021, standing at 742.7 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to May 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +89.4% while in residents abroad grew by 17.4%. The number of guests resident in Portugal, in May 2022, was estimated at 44.8 thousand and the foreign guests at 132.8 thousand.
In the country, in May 2022, the domestic market contributed with 1.8 million overnight stays (+47.7%) and the external markets totalled 4.7 million (+489.5% compared to May 2021).

According to the flash estimate, in the region and for the reference month, the main source markets of non-residents represented 82.5% of overnight stays. In this set, the German market was the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 183.4 thousand in the respective month, followed by the UK with 171.1 thousand and France with 98.6 thousand.
In May of 2022, 13.1% of the tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. Hotels are expected to account for 92.5% of establishments with guest movement (90.5% in April 2022).
