Flash Estimate - In May 2023, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira witnessed a year-on-year growth of 8.5% in overnight stays
According to the initial data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, referring to May 2023, it is estimated that 198.5 thousand guests generated 964.2 thousand overnight stays, reflecting year-on-year changes of +13.6% and +8.5% respectively. Compared to May 2019, there were increases of 48.5% and 34.7%, respectively.
In the first five months of the year, overnight stays reached approximately 4.2 million, representing a 28.0% growth compared to the same period in the previous year.
For the purpose of comparability with the data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), local accommodations with fewer than 10 beds need to be excluded. According to this approach, tourist accommodation overnight stays in May 2023 showed a year-on-year increase of 3.7%, which was lower than the national level (+10.0%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 1.5% compared to the same month last year, reaching 143.7 thousand (14.9% of the total), while overnight stays by non-residents increased by 9.9%, reaching 820.5 thousand. It should be noted that compared to May 2019, there was a change of +73.2% in overnight stays by residents of Portugal and +29.7% in overnight stays generated by non-residents. In May 2023, there were a total of 41.8 thousand guests from the country and 156.7 thousand guests from abroad.
In the country, in May 2023, the domestic market contributed 1.8 million overnight stays, an increase of 0.4%. The international markets predominated (accounting for 75.0% of the total) and totalled 5.4 million overnight stays (+13.6%).

The first estimated data for the reference month in the Region shows that the main source markets for non-residents accounted for 85.1% of the total overnight stays. Among these, the German market recorded the highest number of overnight stays in May 2023, with approximately 202.9 thousand (+12.6% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom with 169.4 thousand (-2.4%), and France with 102.2 thousand (+1.4%).
In May 2023, 8.7% of tourist accommodation establishments were closed or did not record any guest movement.
