According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, for the month of January 2024, it is estimated that there were 118.6 thousand guests, generating 698.4 thousand overnight stays, reflecting year-on-year changes of -2.4% and +0.1%, respectively.
For comparability purposes with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. According to this criterion, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in January 2024 showed a year-on-year decrease of 3.1%, a negative change like that that observed nationally (-0.1%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents in Portugal decreased by 8.6% compared to the same month of the previous year, totalling around 94.2 thousand (13.5% of the total), while those by residents abroad rose by 1.6%, reaching 604.1 thousand. Guests entering in January 2024 with residence in the country totalled 25.1 thousand, and those with residence abroad, 93.5 thousand.
In Portugal, in January 2024, the slowdown in the growth of external markets was accentuated (+1.2%, after +7.5% in December), with 2.3 million overnight stays recorded. Overnight stays from residents totalled 1.1 million, contradicting the growth trajectory of the last three months (-2.6%; +9.6% in December). The largest increases in overnight stays were recorded in the West and Tagus Valley (+18.7%), followed by Norte (+3.7%) and Centro (+3.3%). On the contrary, there were decreases in the Setúbal Peninsula (-9.7%), the Autonomous Region of Azores (-4.0%), Grande Lisboa (-3.9%) and the Autonomous Region of Madeira (-3.1%).

The first estimated data in the Region for the reference month show that the emitting markets of residents abroad represented 86.5% of the total overnight stays. Within this group, the United Kingdom market recorded the one with the most overnight stays in January 2024, with around 168.6 thousand (+3.8% compared to the same month last year), followed by Germany, with 142.9 thousand (-2.7%), and France, with 25.1 thousand (+0.8%).
In January 2024, 16.1% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not record guest movements.
