Tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a year-on-year increase of 7.6% in overnight stays
According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, referring to the month of March 2024, it is estimated that 181.9 thousand guests arrived, generating 924.8 thousand overnight stays, translating into year-on-year changes of +6.1% and +7.6%, respectively.
The cumulative figures of guest arrivals for the period from January to March 2024 (448.6 thousand; +3.6% compared to the same period in 2023) also indicate growth, as did the overnight stays, which exceeded 2.4 million (+5.6% compared to the same quarter of 2023).
For comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. According to this method of results calculation, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in March 2024 showed year-on-year growth of 4.1%, which compares with a positive change of +12.8% at the national level.
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal decreased by 5.3% compared to the same month last year, totalling around 133.6 thousand (14.4% of the total), while those by residents abroad increased by 10.1%, reaching 791.2 thousand. Guests arriving in March 2024 from within the country totalled 40.5 thousand, and those from abroad numbered 141.3 thousand.
In the country as a whole, in March 2024, the growth of external markets intensified (+13.8%), with these markets generating 4.1 million overnight stays. Stays by residents totalled 1.6 million (+10.3%). By NUTS 2 region, the largest increases in overnight stays were recorded in Oeste and Vale do Tejo (+29.4%), followed by Centro (+23.1%) and Alentejo (+21.0%). The most modest growth was observed in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+4.1%) and Grande Lisboa (+8.9%).

The preliminary estimated data in the Region for the reference month show that the emitting markets of residents abroad represented 85.6% of the total overnight stays. Within this group, in March 2024, the German market recorded the most overnight stays, with around 217.6 thousand (+3.8% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom, with 177.4 thousand (+7.3%), and France, with 52.7 thousand (+6.8%).
In March 2024, 10.0% of tourist accommodation establishments were reported to have been closed or did not register any guest activity.
