According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, referring to the month of April 2024, it is estimated that 197.2 thousand guests arrived, generating 973.4 thousand overnight stays, translating into year-on-year positive changes of 2.9% and 4.4%, respectively.
The cumulative figures of guest arrivals for the period from January to April 2024 (646.7 thousand; +3.6% compared to the same period in 2023) also indicate growth, as did the overnight stays, which have approached the 3.4 million (+5.3% compared to the same period of 2023).
For comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. According to this method of results calculation, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in April 2024 showed year-on-year growth of 0.8%, a contrast to the national level decrease (-4.3%). It is important to note that Easter in the previous year was in April, while this year it was spread between March and April.
In the Region, overnight stays by residents in Portugal decreased by 23.3% compared to the same month last year, totalling around 133.5 thousand (13.7% of the total), while those by residents abroad increased by 10.7%, reaching 839.8 thousand. Guests arriving in April 2024 from within the country totalled 38.0 thousand, and those from abroad totalled 159.1 thousand.
In Portugal, in April 2024, overnight stays generated by foreign markets slightly decreased (-0.8%), totalling 4.8 million, while overnight stays by residents amounted to around 1.8 million, declining by 12.5%. By NUTS 2 region, the largest increases in overnight stays were recorded in the Autonomous Regions of the Azores (+7.5%) and Madeira (+0.8%). The Oeste and Vale do Tejo (+0.5%) and Grande Lisboa (+0.1%) also saw slight increases. Alentejo (-11.3%), Algarve (-9.9%), Centro (-8.3%), and Norte (-5.7%) recorded declines.

The preliminary estimated data in the Region for the reference month show that non-resident markets represented 86.3% of the total overnight stays. Among these, in April 2024, the German market recorded the most overnight stays, with approximately 200.9 thousand (+2.7% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom, with 155.4 thousand (+5.0%), and France, with 109.7 thousand (+21.5%).
In April 2024, 8.2% of tourist accommodation establishments were reported to have been closed or did not register any guest activity.
