Flash Estimate - In May 2024, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded, for the first time in this month of the year, over 1 million overnight stays
According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, referring to the month of May 2024, it is estimated that 216.7 thousand guests arrived, generating 1 060.7 thousand overnight stays, translating into year-on-year positive changes of 8.3% and 9.6%, respectively.
The cumulative figures of guest arrivals for the period from January to May 2024 (864.1 thousand; +5.0% compared to the same period in 2023) also indicate growth, as did the overnight stays, surpassing 4.4 million (+6.4% compared to the same period of 2023).
For comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. According to this method of results calculation, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in May 2024 showed year-on-year growth of 5.6%, a positive change similar to the national level (+7.5%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 10.9% compared to the same month last year, totalling around 146.0 thousand (13.8% of the total), while those by residents abroad increased by 9.4%, reaching 914.7 thousand. Guests arriving in May 2024 from within the country totalled 43.4 thousand, and those from abroad numbered 173.4 thousand.
In Portugal, in May 2024, overnight stays by residents totalled 1.9 million, marking a rebound (+7.6%) following a decrease of 12.4% in April. External markets also saw growth (+7.5%; -0.9% in April), reaching 5.8 million overnight stays. All NUTS 2 regions recorded an increase in overnight stays, with Alentejo (+18.0%) and the Autonomous Region of Azores (+17.6%) showing the largest growth, while more modest increases were observed in Algarve (+5.2%), the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+5.6%), and Grande Lisboa (+5.7%).

The preliminary estimated data in the Region for the reference month show that the emitting markets of residents abroad represented 86.2% of the total overnight stays. Within this group, in May 2024, the German market recorded the highest number of overnight stays, with around 216.8 thousand (+6.4% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom, with 175.0 thousand (-0.5%) and France, with 123.2 thousand (+16.9%).
In May 2024, 8.2% of tourist accommodation establishments were reported to have been closed or did not register any guest activity.
