Flash Estimate - In September 2024, the tourist accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a year-on-year increase of 4.3% in overnight stays
According to the preliminary data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, for September 2024, it is estimated that 204.8 thousand guests arrived, generating 1 090.3 thousand overnight stays, reflecting positive year-on-year changes of 5.4% and 4.3%, respectively.
The cumulative figures of guest arrivals for the period from January to September 2024 (1 706.5 thousand; +5.6% compared to the same period in 2023) also demonstrate growth, as did the overnight stays, which approached 9.0 million (+6.2% compared to the same period of 2023).
For comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Following this criterion, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in September 2024 showed a year-on-year increase of 0.1%, lower than the national average increase (+2.4%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 1.1% compared to the same month last year, amounting to approximately 168.5 thousand (15.5% of the total), while those by residents abroad increased by 4.9%, reaching 921.8 thousand. Additionally, in September, guests with residence in the country totalled 41.2 thousand, and those from abroad numbered 163.7 thousand.
Nationally, in September 2024, overnight stays by residents amounted to 2.3 million, a decrease of 0.3% year-on-year, while overnight stays by non-residents reached 6.1 million, growing by 3.5% compared to September 2023. All regions experienced increases in overnight stays, with the largest rises seen in the Azores (+9.0%), Centro (+6.2%), and Norte (+4.6%). Madeira and the Algarve recorded the most modest growth rates (+0.1% and +0.9%, respectively).

The preliminary estimated data in the Region for the reference month show that the emitting markets of residents abroad represented 84.5% of the total overnight stays. Within this group, in September 2024, the German market recorded the highest number of overnight stays, with approximately 221.0 thousand (+3.0% compared to the same month last year), followed by the United Kingdom, with 202.7 thousand (-4.8%) and France, with 85.3 thousand (+17.5%).
