The cumulative figures of guest arrivals for the period from January to December 2024 (2 225.8 thousand; +6.5% compared to the same period in 2023) also demonstrate growth. A similar trend is observed in overnight stays, which surpassed 11.7 million (+7.1% compared to the same period of 2023). It should be noted that both variables reached record-high values.
For comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with fewer than 10 beds. Following this criterion, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in December 2024 showed a year-on-year increase of 8.8%, a change exceeding the national average (+2.9%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 35.3% compared to the same month last year, amounting to approximately 144.5 thousand (18.3% of the total), while those by residents abroad increased by 8.7%, reaching 645.7 thousand. Additionally, in December, guests with residence in the country totalled 37.1 thousand whereas those from abroad numbered 109.2 thousand.

In December 2024, the region of the country with the highest year-on-year growth in overnight stays was the ARM, followed by the Autonomous Region of the Azores (+4.4%). Other regions with increases above 2.0% included Peninsula de Setúbal (+2.9%), Norte (+2.7%), Algarve (+2.6%), and Grande Lisboa (+2.3%). The only regions to record declines were Oeste e Vale do Tejo (-3.0%) and Centro (-0.3%). Over the course of the year, the Autonomous Region of the Azores recorded the highest growth (+9.3%), while Algarve registered the lowest increase, at just +1.9%.

The preliminary estimates for December 2024 indicate that international markets accounted for 81.7% of total overnight stays in the Region. Among these, the German market recorded the highest number of overnight stays, with approximately 170.5 thousand (+10.5% compared to the same month of the previous year), followed by the United Kingdom, with 148.5 thousand (+2.1%), and France, with 27.2 thousand (+14.5%).
