Number of overnight stays reached a new monthly record
Initial estimates for August 2015 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+1.1%), total revenue (+4.4%) and lodging revenue (+6.2%).
At the country level, the rates of change stood at +2.5% in nights spent, +10.0% in total revenue and +10.8% in revenue from accommodation.
The number of overnight stays in Madeira in the month of reference topped 765,000 – a new monthly record.The total revenue and the revenue from accommodation also registered new maximums (37.2 and 24.5 million euros, respectively).
Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that for the reference month the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were -16.8% and +4.3%, respectively. Both the German and British markets grew by 8.7% and 7.9%, while the French market dropped by 1.7% year-on-year.
In the first eight months of 2015, the overnight stays increased by 5.1% when compared to the same period of 2014, while the growth in total revenue (+8.4%) and lodging revenue (+10.6%) was more pronounced.
The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 83.6%, up by 2.4 percentage points from the year before and the highest between the Portuguese NUTS2 regions.
The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +7.0%, increasing to € 56.33, which is also a new monthly record.
