Overnight stays increased by 9.9% year-on-year, with a strong contribution of the Portuguese market (+43.1%)
Initial estimates for March 2016 show increases in the tourism indicators with positive year-on-year rates of change in overnight stays (+9.9%), total revenue (+12.0%) and lodging revenue (+13.2%).
At the country level, the rates of change stood at 20.3% in nights spent, 22.5% in total revenue and 25.6% in revenue from accommodation.
Looking at the data broken down by market, it should be highlighted that the year-on-year change rates in nights spent by the Portuguese and foreign tourists were +43.1% and +7.3%, respectively.
In the first three months of 2016, the overnight stays increased by 10.7% when compared to the same period of 2015, while the growth in total revenue (+16.2%) and lodging revenue (+17.0%) was more pronounced.
The net bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 65.9%, 4.7 percentage points higher than a year before and the highest among the seven NUTS2 Portuguese regions.
The average income per room (RevPAR) recorded a year-on-year change rate of +10.8%, increasing to € 44.28.
More rounds played in Madeira’s golf courses
The data from the Golf Course Survey show that the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the first three months of 2016 stood at 18,357 (up by 32.6% compared to the corresponding period of 2015). 77.8% of those rounds were played by non-members, mainly coming from Nordic countries, UK and Germany. 61.4% of the total rounds were sold by hotel establishments and similar, 24.8% by tour operators, and the remaining 13.8% by the golf courses themselves.
Number of transit passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s ports decreased
According to the data provided by the Port’s authority, 170,799 transit passengers aboard cruise ships were counted in the January to March 2016 period, a 0.2% decrease when compared to the previous year.
