Local administration expenditure on culture and sports increased
In 2016, 16 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira met the eligibility criteria of the Museums Survey (the same as in the previous year). These 16 museums had 229 thousand visitors, up by 4.2% from 2015.
In the 4 botanic gardens and aquariums 665.7 thousand visits were counted in 2016.
Data collected from the art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces survey show that 221 exhibitions with 7,766 pieces (7,779 in 2015) took place in the 30 spaces in activity in Madeira.
In the reference year, 27 periodic publications were counted in Madeira having been released a total of 7.0 million copies (down by 23.0% from 2015).
In 2016, there were 17,999 cinema exhibitions in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, a 8.1% increase over the previous year. The number of spectators in 2016 went up by 4.2% and stood at approximately 275 thousand, with ticket revenues exceeding 1.3 million euros, a 4.7% increase over the year 2015.
According to the 2016 “Survey on Financing of cultural, recreation and sports activities by the local administration” the percentage of expenditure by the local administration of Madeira in cultural and sports activities stood at 5.1%, up by 0.4 percentage points from the previous year. Of the 8.1 million spent in cultural and sports activities, 78.5% was destined for culture and 21.5% for sport.
