In the first quarter of 2021
New wave of the pandemic led to pronounced decrease in the main indicators of the cinema exhibition in the Autonomous Region of Madeira
According to the provisional data made available by the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisuals (ICA), only 219 performances were recorded in the cinemas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the first three months of 2021, a 93.4% year-on-year decrease.
The number of spectators stood at 989, down by 97.6% and the box office revenues were 5.3 thousand euros, a 97.5% decrease compared to the same period of 2020.
For public health reasons - Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic - on 18th March 2020, a state of emergency was enacted in Portugal, through the Decree of the President of the Republic no. 14-A / 2020, regulated by Decree no. 2-A / 2020. The resulting restrictions had an impact on the lives of citizens, including mobility and social contacts. Statistical data on cinema registered from March 2020 should be read in this context.
It is important to note that following the restrictive measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the cinemas in the Region closed in February and March of 2021, which undoubtedly had an impact in the results presented above.
