In the first nine months of 2020

Number of births and deaths dropped, determining a larger natural decrease of the population

Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that in the first three quarters of 2020, the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a natural decrease (-640 persons), since the number of live births in this period (1,375) was smaller than the number of deaths (2,015). In the same period of 2019, the natural change had also been negative (-626 persons, the difference between 1,408 live births and 2,034 deaths).

Until September 2020, 5 deaths under 1 year and 3 dead foetuses were reported. Between January and September 2019, the number of deaths under 1 year was lower (4 deaths) and the number of dead foetuses was the same.

In the period of reference, 405 marriages took place in the registry offices of the Region, down by 324 from the same period of 2019, representing a decrease of 44.4%.
