In the 1st quarter of 2022
Increase in the number of live births, compared to the same period in the previous year, was not enough to mitigate the natural balance decrease
Preliminary data of demographic statistics show that in the first quarter of 2022, the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a negative natural change of -425 persons, since the number of live births in this period (428) was lower than the number of deaths (853). In the same period of 2021, the natural balance had also been negative (-411 persons, representing the difference between 387 live births and 798 deaths).
The number of deaths in the first quarter of 2022 (853) is the highest in the available time series (since 1990) and was 6.9% higher than the number of deaths registered in the same period of 2021.
Contrary to the downward trend of birth rates seen in recent years, the number of live births in the first three months of 2022 increased by 10.6% compared to the same period of 2021.
In the first three months of 2022, 1 death under 1 year and 3 dead foetuses were registered.
In the period of reference, 140 marriages took place in the registry offices of the Region, up by 38 (+37.3%) from the same period of 2021.
