In August 2023
Number of deaths increased by 14.3% compared to the same month the previous year, while the number of live births decreased by 8.7%
In August 2023, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), 248 deaths were recorded, which is higher than the number observed in August 2022 (an increase of 31 deaths, or +14.3%). In the first eight months of the year, there were 1,887 deaths, down by 236 compared to the same period of the previous year (-11.1%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month with the average values of the same month from the years 2016 to 2019, shows an excess mortality of 16.2%. This reflects the fact that, in those years, the number of deaths was consistently lower than the figure recorded in August 2023.
During this period, there were no deaths of infants under 1 year old or foetus.
Also, in August 2023, there were 147 live births, representing an 8.7% decrease compared to the same month in 2022 (14 fewer births). The total number of live births recorded in the first eight months of 2023 (1,126) was similar to that observed in the same period of 2022 (1,127).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 101 persons in August 2023, which is more unfavourable than the same month the previous year when it was -56. In the first eight months of 2023, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -761, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2022 (-996).
In the eighth month of 2023, 105 marriages were celebrated, marking a decrease of 30.5% compared to the number of marriages conducted in August 2022 (46 fewer marriages). From January to August 2023, 686 marriages were celebrated, 53 fewer (-7.2%) than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
