In September 2023, the number of deaths increased by 0.9% compared to the same month of the previous year, while the number of live births decreased by 10.7%
In September 2023, 220 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a slightly higher figure than in September 2022 (an increase of 2 deaths; +0.9%). In the first nine months of the year, there were 2,108 deaths, 233 fewer deaths than the corresponding period in the previous year (-10.0%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019, shows an excess mortality of 6.7%. This reflects the fact that, over those years, the number of deaths was always lower than the value recorded in September 2023.
During the reference period, one dead fetus was recorded, and there were no deaths under the age of 1 year.
Also in September 2023, 151 live births were counted, representing a decrease of 10.7% compared to the same month in 2022 (18 fewer births). The total number of live births recorded in the first nine months of 2023 (1,277) was lower than that in the same period of 2022 (1,296) by 1.5% (19 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 69 persons in September 2023, more unfavourable than in the same month of the previous year, which recorded a value of -49. In the first nine months of 2023, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -831, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2022 (-1,045).
In the ninth month of 2023, 163 marriages were celebrated, representing an increase of 10.9% compared to the number of marriages conducted in September 2022 (+16 marriages). From January to September 2023, 849 marriages were celebrated, 37 fewer marriages (-4.2%) than in the corresponding period of 2022.
