In December 2023
Number of deaths decreased by 13.2% compared to the same month last year, while the number of live births decreased by 16.5%
In December 2023, 237 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a lower figure than observed in December 2022 (36 fewer deaths; -13.2%). In 2023, there were 2,787 deaths, 316 fewer than the previous year (-10.2%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths of the reference month with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (238 deaths, on average), shows that there was a mortality deficit of 0.4%, reflecting the fact that, over those years, the average number of deaths was very close to the value recorded in December 2023.
During the reference period, no dead foetuses were recorded nor deaths under the age of 1.
Also in December 2023, 142 live births were recorded, corresponding to a decrease of 16.5% compared to the same month in 2022 (28 fewer births). The total number of live births recorded in 2023 (1,747) was lower than that in 2022 (1,758) by 0.6% (11 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 95 persons in December 2023, less severe than in the same month last year, which recorded a value of -103. In 2023, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -1,040, showing an improvement compared to the value observed in 2022 (-1,345).
In the last month of 2023, 97 marriages were celebrated, representing an increase of 15.5% compared to the number of marriages performed in December 2022 (+13 marriages). Throughout 2023, 1,137 marriages were celebrated, 2 fewer than the previous year.
