Characterisation of Fathers of children born in 2022

To mark Father's Day, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) provides a brief characterisation of the profile of fathers of children born alive in 2022, born from mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), also analysing various indicators among the NUTS2 regions (2013).

The Fathers are characterised according to sociodemographic indicators obtained by Statistics Portugal (INE) through a direct and exhaustive collection of birth records, resulting from mandatory civil registration in the Integrated System for Civil Registration and Identification.

The Fathers of the 1,758 children born alive in 2022, from mothers residing in the ARM, were characterised as follows:

  • 23 were fathers of twins;
  • 98.2% were residents in the ARM;
  • 4.3% had foreign nationality, with Brazilian and Venezuelan being the predominant ones;
  • 52.7% were aged between 30 and 39 years;
  • 17 was the age of the youngest father and 68 was the age of the oldest father;
  • The average age of the fathers was 34.8 years;
  • 41.8% lived out of wedlock in cohabitation with the mothers of the children;
  • 20.5% lived out of wedlock without cohabitation with the mothers of the children;
  • 40.3% had completed secondary education, 24.9% had completed tertiary education, and 24.2% had completed primary education - 3rd cycle;
  • 92.7% were employed and 4.7% were unemployed;
  • 19.7% were salesmen.
