In September 2024, 220 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), a figure slightly lower than that observed in the same month of 2023 (1 fewer death; -0.5%). The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the deaths in the reference month (220 deaths) with the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (206 deaths on average), indicates an excess mortality of 6.7%. Additionally, in September 2024, there were 163 live births, corresponding to a rise of 7.9% compared to the same month of 2023 (12 more live births). The total number of live births recorded in the first nine months of 2024 (1 300) was 1.8% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2023 (23 more live births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 57 persons in September 2024, which is less severe than in the same month of the previous year, when the balance stood at -70. In the first nine months of 2024, the cumulative value of the natural balance was -650, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2023 (‑833).

In the ninth month of 2024, 155 marriages were celebrated, a decrease of 4.9% compared to the number of marriages held in September 2023 (8 fewer marriages). From January to September 2024, a total of 908 marriages were celebrated, 57 more (+6.7%) than in the same period the previous year.
