Fewer births, deaths and marriages in the Autonomous Region of Madeira than in 2013
The final results of the demographic statistics for 2014, show that the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) registered a negative natural change of 993 persons (-597 in 2013).
In 2014, 1,739 live births to mothers living in RAM were recorded, corresponding to a decrease of 5.4% compared to the previous year (-100 children). The sex ratio at birth was 102.2%, revealing the prevalence of the male gender. 37.0% of the live births belonged to mothers with an age under 30 years and 33.2% to mothers aged between 30 and 34 years old.
The number of registered deaths in 2014 (2,732) was higher than in the previous year (2,436). 93.1% of the deceased persons were aged 50 or more and 62.0% were more than 75 years old. January and February were the months with the highest number of deaths (320 and 252, respectively), while the lowest value was registered in July (184 deaths).
In the year of reference, eight deaths under 1 year and four dead fetuses were registered. The infant mortality rate in 2014 was 4.6‰ (2.7‰ in 2013).
753 marriages were counted in 2014, down by 40 from 2013. Only 0.5% were same sex marriages. 47.9% of the marriages were celebrated in the Summer (from June to September). The highest number of marriages was registered in September (108) and the lowest in February (30).
