Number of deaths decreased by 7.6% compared to the previous year, while the number of live births increased by 2.6%
In December 2024, a total of 231 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, a figure lower than that observed in December 2023 (six fewer deaths; -2.5%). Throughout 2024, there were 2 574 deaths, 213 fewer than in the previous year (-7.6%).
The assessment of “excess mortality,” which compares the deaths recorded in the reference month (231 deaths) with the average for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 238 deaths), indicates a mortality deficit of 3.0%. This reflects the fact that, in the first half of the period considered (2016 and 2017), the number of deaths was higher than that recorded in December 2024, whereas in the last two years (2018 and 2019), it was lower.
In December 2024, one death of an infant under one year of age was recorded, and no stillbirths were reported. Over the year as a whole, six deaths of children under one year of age were recorded, five more than in 2023. Regarding stillbirths, seven were recorded in 2024, two more than in the previous year.
Also in December 2024, a total of 171 live births were registered, representing a 20.4% increase compared to the same month in 2023 (29 more births). The total number of live births recorded in 2024 (1 792) was 2.6% higher than in 2023 (45 more live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 60 persons in December 2024, a less severe outcome than in the same month of the previous year, which recorded -95. The cumulative value of natural balance for 2024 stood at -782, showing an improvement compared to 2023 (-1 040).
In the last month of 2024, 95 marriages were celebrated, representing a 2.1% decline compared to December 2023 (two fewer marriages). Over the course of 2024, a total of 1 225 marriages were celebrated, 88 more (+7.7%) than in the previous year.
