In February 2025

Number of deaths increased compared to the same month of the previous year, while the number of live births decreased

In February 2025, a total of 233 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, a figure higher than that observed in February 2024 (17 more deaths; 7.9%). From January to February, a total of 532 deaths were registered, 73 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (+15.9%).

The assessment of “excess mortality,” which compares the number of deaths recorded in the reference month (233 deaths) with the average for the same month from 2016 to 2019 (an average of 239 deaths), indicates a deficit mortality rate of 2.5%. This reflects the fact that, in the first half of the period considered (2016 and 2017), the number of deaths was lower than that recorded in February 2025, whereas in the last two years (2018 and 2019), it was higher.

In February 2025, 1 death under 1 year of age and 1 stillbirth were recorded.

Also in February 2025, a total of 127 live births were registered, corresponding to a decrease of 5.2% compared to the same month in 2024 (7 fewer births). The total number of live births recorded in the first two months of 2024 stood at 254, which is 9.6% lower than that recorded in the same period of the previous year (-27 live births).

The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 106 persons in February 2025, a more pronounced decline than in the same month of the previous year, when the balance was -82. In the first two months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance stood at -278, reflecting a further decline compared to the same period of 2024 (-178).

In the second month of 2025, 68 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 28.3% compared to February 2024 (15 more marriages). From January to February 2025, a total of 132 marriages were celebrated, 14 more (+11.9%) than in the corresponding period of 2024.
