In October 2025
Number of deaths increased by 14.0% compared with the same month of the previous year, while the number of live births declined by 5.8%
In October 2025, 212 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), exceeding the figure observed in October 2024 (an increase of 26 deaths; +14.0%). From January to October, a total of 2 382 deaths were registered, 235 more than in the corresponding period of the previous year (+10.9%).
The assessment of “excess mortality”, which compares the number of deaths in the reference month (212) with the average number observed in the same month over the period 2016 to 2019 (191 deaths on average), indicates a mortality deficit of 11.3%. This reflects the fact that, across those years, the number of deaths was consistently lower than the value recorded in October 2025.
In October 2025, no deaths under 1 year of age nor stillbirths were recorded.
Also in October 2025, 163 live births were registered, corresponding to a decrease of 5.8% compared with October 2024 (10 fewer live births). The total number of live births registered in the first ten months of 2025 (1 407) was lower than that observed in the same period of 2024 by 5.1% (76 fewer live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 49 persons in October 2025, more adverse than in the same month of the previous year, when the figure stood at -13. In the first ten months of 2025, the cumulative natural balance amounted to -975, representing a deterioration compared with the same period of 2024 (-664).
In the ten months of 2025, 135 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to an increase of 2.3% compared with October 2024 (3 more marriages). From January to October, a total of 1 085 marriages were registered, 41 more (+3.9%) than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
