Number of building permits increased compared to the previous year, while the completed buildings decreased

According to preliminary data from the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira collected from the Municipalities of the Region, within the framework of the Urban Operations Indicators System, 547 buildings were granted licenses in 2024, an increase of 37 (+7.3%) compared to 2023 (510). The completed buildings amounted to 400, representing a 15.3% decrease compared to 2023 (472).

Of the licensed construction and demolition projects, 76.4% corresponded to new buildings (418), of which 83.5% were for residential purposes (349). These projects resulted in the licensing of 1 065 dwellings in new constructions for residential housing, representing a decrease of 3.7% compared to 2023 (1 106).

As for the completed buildings (400), 67.5% of these were new constructions for residential housing (270). Regarding the dwellings in new constructions for residential housing (860), the results indicate an increase of 19.4% compared to the previous year (720).

Regarding the 4^th quarter of 2024, building permits (152) saw an increase of 28.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, while completed buildings (103) observed a decrease of 8.0%.
