In 2019

Commercialisation of banana increased by 29.2% compared to the previous year

According to the data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA), 21,649.6 tonnes of bananas produced in Madeira were commercialised in 2019, up by 4,890.1 tonnes from 2018 (+29.2%).

Of that total, 84.7% was dispatched, mainly to Mainland Portugal (81.0% in 2018).

The overall increase was determined by the commercialisation of extra class (+55.6%).  Class I and class II decreased by 2.2% and 24.3% respectively.

September was the month of 2019 in which the largest quantity of marketed bananas (2,900.0 tonnes) was recorded and February the one with the lowest abundance of this product (816.5 tonnes).

September and July were the months with the highest year-on-year increase (+90.7% and +65.0%, respectively). From January to April 2019, monthly year-on-year drops were recorded, especially in February and January, with decreases of 31.9% and 28.6%, respectively.
