In the first quarter of 2023
Commercialisation of bananas remained stable compared to the corresponding period
According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DRADR), a total of 5,578.4 tonnes of bananas were sold in the first four months of 2023. This represents a marginal decrease of only 6.1 tonnes (-0.1%) compared to the corresponding period. Out of the total, 78.7% was shipped, with the mainland being the main destination, although slightly lower than the first quarter of 2022 when it accounted for 80.6%.
The performance of different banana classes varied during this period. Extra class bananas saw an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period in 2022. On the other hand, Class I and Class II bananas experienced reductions of 13.9% and 9.4% respectively. It is noteworthy that extra class bananas accounted for 82.5% of the total sales during this quarter, slightly higher than the corresponding period in 2022 (80.6%).
Among the first four months of 2023, April had the highest volume of banana sales (1,676.6 tonnes), while February had the lowest (991.6 tonnes). January recorded the highest relative increase (+14.1%), while February showed the greatest reduction (-21.2%).
