Banana commercialisation increased by 18.7% year-on-year

According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DRADR), in the first four months of 2024, 6,623.5 tonnes of bananas were commercialised, an increase of 1,045.1 tonnes compared to the same period last year (+18.7%). Of this total, 80.5% were dispatched to the mainland, compared to 78.7% in the first quadrimester of 2023.

All classes experienced growth compared to the same period in 2023. The volume of banana of Class “Extra” increased by 13.1% of Class I bananas by 62.9%, and of Class II bananas by 12.4%.

It is noteworthy that in the referenced quadrimester, Class “Extra” bananas accounted for 78.6% of the total bananas commercialised, compared to 82.5% in the same period last year, representing a decline in the market share of Class “Extra” bananas by 3.9 percentage points.

April recorded the highest volume of banana commercialisation in the first quadrimester of 2024, with 1,956.6 tonnes. February saw the lowest volume of banana commercialisation (1,427.6 tonnes), although it registered the highest year-on-year increase (+44.0%).
