In the 1st quarter of 2026 Banana commercialisation decreased by 25.0% in year-on-year terms
According to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DRA), in the first three months of 2026, 3 295.0 tonnes of bananas were commercialised in the ARM, down by 1 098.6 tonnes over the same period of the previous year (-25.0%). This decrease is mainly attributable to unfavourable weather conditions during the reference period, which affected the productive potential of the crop.
Of that total, 72.8% was dispatched (78.6% in the 1st quarter of 2025), with the mainland as the main destination.
Compared to the same period of 2025, class II bananas increased by 26.5%, whilst Extra and class I presented decreases of 28.2% and 24.4%, respectively.
It should be noted that, in the reference quarter, Extra class banana accounted for 78.0% of total banana commercialised, compared with 81.4% in the same period of the previous year, equivalent to a decrease in the respective share of 3.4 percentage points.
In March, the highest volume of banana commercialisation of the 1st quarter of 2026 was recorded (1 248.1 tonnes), also being the month with the smallest year-on-year decrease (-3.5%). February was the month with the lowest commercialisation volume of this agricultural product (911.2 tonnes), with a decrease of 33.9% compared to the same month of 2025.
