Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases Agriculture and Fishery Statistics for 2019
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases today the Agriculture and Fishery Statistics for 2019.
The main results are summarised as follows:
In agriculture:
- The potato production stood at 28,978 tonnes in 2019, increasing by 0.5% from 2018, followed by sweet potato (12,057 tonnes) and sugar cane (9,814 tonnes). Banana (22,732 tonnes, a 29.2% increase from 2018) and vitis vinifera grapes (3,960 tonnes, +9.3%) were the most important productions of permanent crops in 2019.
In animal production:
- In aviculture, the egg production in 2019 reached 19.0 million units, growing by 4.2% from 2018. The production of poultry meat increased by 1.2%, totalling 3.157,4 tonnes in the year of reference.
- There was a 4.5% increase of the livestock slaughterings.
In fishery:
- In 2019, the landed catch increased by 6.7% in volume to 8.023,5 tonnes and rose by 17.8% in value to 22.1 million euros. The catches of tuna and tuna-like species went up by 9.6% and the catches of black-scabbard fish rose by 2.1%.
Regional Economic Accounts for Agriculture (REGEAA) and exports:
- The REGEAA data show that the agricultural output in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 102.8 million euros in 2018, increasing by 3.9% in nominal terms. 83.8% of the total agricultural output came from crop output and 11.9% from animal output.
- The Autonomous Region of Madeira dispatched 18.3 thousand tonnes of banana in 2019, 14.2 tons of anona and 4.4 tons of avocado. 3 thousand protea flowers and 2 thousand cymbidium stems were also exported in the year of reference.
Agricultural prices:
- In 2019, the agricultural products producer price index rose by 5.1% over 2018. This increase was driven by the growth in the price index of other crop products (+7.6%), fruits (+6.6%) and vegetables and horticultural products (+6.1%). The price index of agricultural production means went up by 2.1% from 2018, an increase which can be partly explained by a rise in the price index of seeds and plants (+33.7%) and animal feed (+4.5%).

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases also today, on its official statistics website, a time series on Agriculture and Fisheries Statistics updated with the data for 2019.
The information for the 1976-2019 period is presented in three different chapters:
- Agriculture;
- Fisheries;
- Agricultural economic accounts and exports of agricultural products;
- Agricultural prices.
