In 2014, compared to 2013

Landed catch soared by 80.1%; aviculture and livestock slaughterings recorded sharp decreases

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases today the Agriculture and Fishery Statistics for 2014.

The main results are summarised as follows:

In agriculture:

- According to the Survey on the structure of agricultural holdings/2013, in this year, there were 12,068 agricultural holdings and a total of 5,262 hectares (1 hectare = 100 ares = 10,000m2) of Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Compared to the Agricultural Census, the number of holdings dropped by 11.3%, while the UAA decreased by 3.1%.

- The production of potatoes stood at 36,087 tonnes in 2014, dropping by 23,5% from 2013. Banana (19,079 tonnes, +18.0% than in 2013) and grapes (4,218 tonnes, -7.1%) were the most important productions of permanent crops in 2014.

In animal production:

- In aviculture, the egg production in 2014 reached 22.4 million units, down by -29.4% from 2013. This result was influenced by the need for equipment replacement by some of the production units, due to recent specific legislation. The production of poultry meat also dropped by 7.8%, totaling 3.757,2 tonnes in the year of reference.

- Decrease by 16.6% in the livestock slaughterings, a trend shared by all species, except for goats.

In fishery:

- In 2014, the landed catch soared by 80.1% in volume and by 52.9% in value. The sharp rise in the catches of tuna and similar are the main explanation for these results, although the increase in the catches of black-scabbard fish should also be highlighted (+8.9% in volume and +17.3% in value).

Regional Economic Accounts for Agriculture (REGEAA) and exports:

- The REGEAA data show that agricultural output in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew from 72.4 million euros in 1995 to 117.3 million euros in 2013. Between 2012 and 2013 (for these years the data is still is provisional) agricultural output rose by 5.7% in nominal terms. In 2013, 84.9% of the total agricultural output came from crop output and 11.7% from animal output.

- The Autonomous Region of Madeira exported 15.6 thousand tonnes of banana and 258.0 tonnes of sweet potato in 2014. 53 thousand protea flowers and 8 900 cymbidium stems were also exported in the year of reference.
