In 2015
Agricultural prices and egg and poultry meat production increased compared to 2014. Livestock slaughtering and landed catch dropped
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases today the Agriculture and Fishery Statistics for 2015.
The main results are summarised as follows:
In agriculture:
- The potatoproduction stood at 37,169 tonnes in 2015, a 3.0% growth over 2014, remaining as the highest among temporary crops. Banana (18,578 tonnes, a 2.6% drop compared to 2014) and vitis vinifera grapes (4,819 tonnes, +14.3%) were the most important productions of permanent crops in 2015.
In animal production:
- In aviculture, the egg production in 2015 reached 23.8 million units, up by 6.1% from 2014. The production of poultry meat also increased by 6.2%, totaling 3.991,2 tonnes in the year of reference.
- Decrease by 5.0% in the livestock slaughterings.
In fishery:
- In 2015, the landed catch dropped by 24.9% in volume and by 6.3% in value. The sharp drop in the catches of tuna and similar is the main explanation for these results. The catches of black-scabbard fish decreased in volume (-0.6%) and rose in value (+15.1%).
Regional Economic Accounts for Agriculture (REGEAA) and exports:
- The REGEAA data show that agricultural output in the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 90.1 million euros in 2014. Between 2013 and 2014 (for 2014 the data is still is provisional) agricultural output decreased by 13.6% in nominal terms. 82.4% of the total agricultural output came from crop output and 14.0% from animal output.
- The Autonomous Region of Madeira exported 15.0 thousand tonnes of banana and 185.0 tonnes of sweet potato in 2015. 33 thousand protea flowers and 9 thousand cymbidium stems were also exported in the year of reference.
Agricultural prices:
- In 2015, the agricultural producer price index rose by 15.3% over 2014. This increase was driven by the growth in the price index of potatoes (62.3%), other vegetables (+36.5%) and fruits (17.8%).
