In the first nine months of 2025
Value of Madeira Wine sales up by 0.2% year-on-year, despite a 1.0% drop in volume
According to data provided by IVBAM – Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute, IP-RAM, in the first nine months of 2025, the sales of Madeira Wine amounted to around 2 154.6 thousand litres, corresponding to first-sale revenues of approximately 14.5 million euros. Compared with the same period of the previous year, there was a 1.0% decrease in volume, although sales value grew by 0.2%.
Between January and September 2025, sales in the Portuguese market reached 376.9 thousand litres and generated 3.7 million euros (-17.0% and -10.5%, respectively, compared with the same period of the previous year), of which 312.5 thousand litres and 3.1 million euros resulted from sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Exports to European Union (EU) countries totalled 1.1 million litres, generating 5.3 million euros, which represented year-on-year changes of +6.1% in volume and +10.5% in value. In turn, exports to third countries amounted to 641.2 thousand litres, generating revenues of 5.5 million euros, corresponding to decreases of 1.4% in volume and 0.8% in value.
Within the EU, there was a notable increase in sales to the French market – which continues to be the most important among EU countries – with year-on-year changes of +8.6% in volume and +18.2% in value. On the other hand, sales to Belgium decreased by 1.1% in volume and 9.8% in value. In Germany, there was a drop in value (-4.3%) but an increase in volume (+2.2%).
In non-EU markets, sales to the United Kingdom stood out positively, increasing by 5.7% in volume and 27.4% in value, as well as to the Japanese market, with growth of 9.1% and 14.3%, respectively. In another important non-EU market – the United States – performance was negative, with decreases of 8.5% in volume and 21.3% in value.

Of the total wine sold during these nine months, 78.5% corresponded to bottled wine, sold at an average price of 7.79 euros per litre (7.93 euros/litre in the first nine months of 2025). The remaining wine was sold in bulk, at an average price of 2.80 euros per litre, 0.05 euros/litre less than in the same period of the previous year.
