Region reports a positive trade balance with foreign countries for the sixth consecutive year
According to the final data for 2022 related to International Trade of Goods, the trade balance for goods transactions recorded a surplus of approximately 15.0 million euros, which is lower than the previous year when the positive trade balance with foreign countries was 20.3 million euros.
An analysis by flow type shows that exports increased by 34.4% in 2022, totalling 359.2 million euros, an increase of 92.0 million euros compared to the previous year. The significant increase in exports to Extra-EU countries, reaching around 236.2 million euros in 2022, contributed to the overall export growth, exceeding the 166.6 million euros recorded in 2021. Trade in goods with Intra-EU countries also increased, going from 100.6 million euros in 2021 to 123.0 million euros in 2022, further contributing to export growth.

Imports reached 344.2 million euros, marking a 39.4% increase in 2022, equivalent to an increase of 97.3 million euros. This growth is primarily driven by higher imports from Intra-EU countries, which amounted to 233.8 million euros in 2022, a 68.5 million euro increase compared to the previous year. Import purchases from Extra-EU countries also grew, from 81.7 million euros in 2021 to 110.4 million euros in 2022. These results reflect an import coverage rate by exports of 104.4% (compared to 108.2% in 2021).
According to the analysis conducted by DREM, enterprises registered in the International Business Centre (IBC) of Madeira were responsible for exports totalling 283.8 million euros in 2022, exceeding the 206.4 million euros observed in the previous year. The share of exports made by these enterprises in the total was 79.0% in the year under review (compared to 77.2% in 2021).
Regarding imports by enterprises registered in the IBC of Madeira, the value of goods acquired from foreign companies in 2022 reached around 181.1 million euros, an increase from the previous year's 140.6 million euros.
