Sales of enterprises headquartered in the Region through e-commerce increased by 87.2% compared to 2021
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the main results of the Information and Knowledge Society Business Survey for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the years 2023, 2022, and 2021 (revised). This survey is conducted nationwide, usually between March and July each year, with coordination for the ARM conducted by DREM.
In 2023, 97.1% of enterprises in the ARM and 38.3% of employees have internet access for professional purposes, an increase of 0.1 percentage points and 0.9 percentage points, respectively, compared to 2022. At the national level, these indicators were 96.9% and 48.9%, respectively.
In the same year, 54.7% of enterprises indicated having their own website or one belonging to the economic group to which they belong, with the majority of these enterprises providing descriptions of goods or services and/or price lists (86.3%).
In 2023, 59.3% of enterprises use digital communication means (social media), and almost all of these enterprises use social networks (99.2%).
Sales through e-commerce represented 8.1% of the total turnover in 2022 (an increase of 1.8 percentage points from the previous year), reaching 350 million euros (an increase of 87.2% compared to 2021).
In 2023, 17.1% of enterprises have their employees engaged in data analytics, and in 23.7% of cases, data analysis is carried out by an external enterprise or organisation. Regarding data trading, in 2022, 0.7% of enterprises sold (including access to) some of their data, and 1.3% acquired (including access to) some data.
In the same year, 44.4% of enterprises purchased cloud computing services (an increase of 1.8 percentage points from 2021), with email and file storage services being prominent (97.0% and 68.8%, respectively).
In 2023, 3.5% of enterprises use Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, an increase of 0.9 percentage points from 2021, with the most commonly used being those that automate various workflows or assist in decision-making and machine learning for data analysis (including deep learning).
