Retention and desistance rate at basic education and success rate at secondary education increased
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases an update of the time series on Education, by including data from the school year 2017/2018. This information is provided by the Education System Observatory of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OERAM).
Concerning pre-primary education, in the school year 2017/2018 there were 125 institutions (down by 4 from the previous school year). The number of kindergarten teachers in preschool education stood at 750 (737 in 2016/2017), while the number of children enrolled at this level was 5.6 thousand (5.9 thousand in 2016/2017).
The number of students enrolled decreased in all three basic levels of education (-1.6% in the 1st cycle, -1.8% in the 2nd cycle and -2.6% in the 3rd cycle).
The retention and desistence rate at basic education stood at 5.8%, up by 0.2 percentage points (p.p.) over the previous school year.

The number of students enrolled at secondary education decreased by 0.7%. The success rate at secondary education was 83.6%, increasing by 0.1 p.p. from 2016/2017.
6.0 thousand teachers worked in pre-primary education, basic education and secondary educational institutions.
Concerning tertiary education, the number of students enrolled at this level of education in 2017/2018 was 3.2 thousand, down by 1.3% from the previous school year. There are eight institutions providing tertiary education (six public and two private). The teaching staff rose to 349 (340 in 2016/2017).
