DREM released the preliminary results of the 2022 Community Innovation Survey 2022
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira releases today the preliminary results of the 2022 Community Innovation Survey.
This statistical operation, conducted biennially, is the result of cooperation between Statistics Portugal (INE) and the Directorate-General of Statistics for Education and Science (DGEEC), with delegated responsibilities within the National Statistical System. Regarding the Autonomous Region of Madeira, DREM coordinated the survey, which targeted 466 enterprises headquartered in the region.
Between 2020 and 2022, 41.6% of the enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira engaged in innovative activities, with 48.4% of them introducing innovations with environmental benefits
During this period, 41.6% of enterprises in Madeira reported engaging in innovation activities, a slight decrease from the previous period (42.6% between 2018 and 2020, and 33.5% between 2016 and 2018), and slightly lower than the national average of 44.7%. Regarding the types of innovation, 22.4% of enterprises introduced product innovations (goods or services), while 38.0% introduced process innovations (21.9% and 40.3%, respectively, in the 2018-2020 period).
Additionally, 48.4% of innovative enterprises introduced innovations with environmental benefits either in the production process or during the consumption or use of goods or services by the end user, with 47.1% being environmental innovations within the enterprise and 44.0% occurring during the consumption or use phase.
Moreover, 4.0% of innovative enterprises cooperated with other enterprises or organizations in R&D activities and/or other innovation activities between 2020 and 2022, which is 3.2 percentage points (pp) lower than the national average (7.2%).
In 2022, total expenditure on innovation activities reached 22.9 million euros, a slight increase of 0.4% compared to 2020, representing approximately 0.5% of enterprises’ turnover (0.4 pp lower than in 2020). Nationally, expenditure on innovation activities amounted to 3,882.2 million euros (1.0% of turnover), an increase of 41.9% compared to 2020.
Furthermore, 10.8% of turnover in 2022 resulted from the introduction of new or improved products (an increase of 4.0 pp compared to 2020 and 2018), with 9.9% resulting from the introduction of new goods or services for the enterprise and 0.8% from the introduction of new goods or services for the market (compared to 4.8% and 1.9% in 2020, respectively).
Between 2020 and 2022, 48.4% of enterprises considered a high degree of importance for their economic performance to focus on improving existing goods or services.
