DREM releases new edition of the Barometer of the Outermost Regions

Continuing its initiative to provide a Barometer of the Outermost Regions, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is today releasing the 4th edition of this publication.

As is widely known, the European Union (EU) comprises nine regions that benefit from the status of Outermost Regions (ORs), as defined in Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU.

The " Barometer of the Outermost Regions " brings together, in a single information repository, a set of indicators that characterise the ORs, based on data sourced from various statistical authorities and official data producers.

The publication is structured into seventeen chapters, sixteen of which are carried over from the previous edition (territory, population, education, health, labour market, income, economic accounts, prices, agriculture, transport, tourism, science and technology, information society, crime, regional competitiveness, and social progress), with a new chapter now included, dedicated to enterprises.

The main findings for each thematic area are as follows:

Territory – Madeira is the Outermost Region (OR) located closest to the capital of its respective Member State.

Population – The Canary Islands are the only OR with a total fertility rate lower than Madeira.

Education – Madeira records the lowest early school leaving rate and the lowest NEET rate among the ORs.

Health – Madeira stands out positively in terms of infant mortality rate and hospital beds per 100 000 inhabitants.

Labour Market – Madeira and the Azores are the only ORs with unemployment rates below those of their respective countries.

Income – Madeira shows the most favourable outcomes in poverty and inequality indicators.

Economic Accounts – In real terms, GDP growth was highest in Madeira and the Canary Islands.

Prices – Price growth in Madeira exceeded the national average.

Enterprises – Madeira records the second highest enterprise density, following Martinique.

Agriculture – Madeira matches the Canary Islands in the ratio of utilised agricultural area to total surface area.

Transport – Madeira and the Azores recorded the highest growth in air passenger transport.

Tourism – The Canary Islands and Madeira recorded more than 10 000 overnight stays per km².

Science and Technology – The R&D share of GDP in the Macaronesia ORs is very low.

Information Society – The ORs of the Iberian countries outperform their respective national averages in the percentage of households with internet access.

Crime – Madeira performs better than most other ORs across various crime categories.

EU Regional Competitiveness Index – Madeira ranked 2nd among the ORs.

EU Social Progress Index – Madeira and the Azores improved their positions in the ranking.
