Landed catch increased compared to the same period last year, while industrial poultry farming, livestock slaughter, and aquaculture production decreased
According to data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from industrial poultry farms in the region, in the 1st quarter of 2024, egg production amounted to around 7.1 million units, decreasing by 9.6% year-on-year. During the same period, poultry meat recorded a very slight decrease of 0.1% compared to the first three months of the previous year, totalling 920.4 tonnes. In turn, according to data provided by the Regional Slaughterhouse of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM), the total livestock slaughtered amounted to 168.5 tonnes, decreasing by 4.2% compared to the 1st quarter of 2023.
In the fishing sector, data collected from the Regional Directorate of Fisheries, for the 1st quarter of 2024, shows a year-on-year increase in the volume of landed catch (+3.0%) and in the first-sale value (+8.5%). Throughout the first three months of the current year, the landed catch in the region amounted to 834.2 tonnes, generating first-sale revenues of 4.5 million euros.
Regarding the main species caught, chub mackerel (-69.8%), blue jack mackerel (-59.7%), and tuna and tuna-like species (-5.1%) experienced decreases. Conversely, black scabbardfish recorded an increase of 16.8%, which was significant in the overall growth of catches. In terms of value, black scabbardfish represented 68.2% of first-sale revenues, showing a positive trend (+26.7% compared to the same quarter of 2023), contributing to the aforementioned increase in total revenues. On the other hand, tuna and similar species experienced a decrease of 22.3%. The average price of fish at the first sale, for the reference period (excluding fish landed for self-consumption), was 5.50 euros (5.25 euros in the same period of 2023), with the average price for tuna and tuna-like species reaching 7.56 euros (9.25 euros in the same period last year) and for black scabbardfish 5.04 euros (4.67 euros in the first three months of the previous year).
