In the first half of 2024
Poultry farming and aquaculture increased compared to the same period last year, while livestock slaughtering and landed catch fell
According to information collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from the region's industrial poultry farms, egg production in the first half of 2024 was around 16.2 million units, up 1.3% year-on-year.
In the same period, poultry meat grew by 0.1% compared to the first six months of the previous year, totalling 1,820.1 tonnes.
Reducing the scope of the analysis to the 2nd quarter of 2024, there were year-on-year increases in egg production and poultry meat of 11.8% and 0.3%, respectively.
In turn, according to data provided by the Slaughter Centre of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM), between January and June 2024, livestock slaughtering amounted to around 361.8 tonnes, representing a year-on-year change of -8.5%, to which the evolution seen in the 2nd quarter of 2024 contributed (-11.9%).
In the field of fishing, the information collected from the Regional Directorate of Fisheries for the 1st half of 2024 shows that this period was characterized by a year-on-year decrease in the volume of landed catch (-15.4%), with the total standing at around 2,046.6 tonnes. The same trend was observed in the value of first sales (-4.0%), with the half-year total standing at 10.4 million euros. In the 2nd quarter of 2024, the year-on-year change in volume was -24.7% and in value -11.8%.
By species, compared to the first six months of 2023, the catch of tuna and tuna-like fish fell by 49.4% and the first sale value fell by 41.6%. The catch of black scabbardfish increased in volume (+19.4%) and in first sale value (+28.5%), making it the most abundant species in the first six months of 2024, accounting for 66.8% of the total, followed by tuna and similar with 24.5%.
The average price of fish at first sale for the period in question (excluding fish unloaded for self-consumption) was €5.17 (€4.55 in the same period of 2023), with the average price for tuna and similar fish reaching €5.43 (€4.71 in the same period of the previous year) and for black scabbardfish €5.05 (€4.72 in the first six months of the previous year).

Aquaculture production grew by 11.1% year-on-year
According to information collected by DREM from aquaculture production companies in the Region, 691.3 tonnes of sea bream were produced in the first half of 2024, up 11.1% year-on-year. Sales amounted to 4.3 million euros, an increase of 16.9%.
By market, it can be seen that 88.9% of the value of sales relates to the national market (Mainland Portugal and the Azores) and only 11.0% to the regional market.
In the 2nd quarter of 2024, the changes in production and in the sales value were +78.0% and +72.6%, respectively.
