In 2024

Egg production, livestock slaughter and landed catch decreased compared to the previous year, while poultry slaughtering increased

According to data collected by the Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM) from enterprises engaged in industrial poultry farming in the Region, in 2024, egg production totalled 32.4 million units, a decrease of 0.9% compared to the previous year. A similar trend was recorded in livestock slaughter, which reached 881.2 tonnes, down by 8.1% from 2023. This decline was driven by reductions in cattle slaughter (-4.3%) and pig slaughter (-70.5%). Notably, cattle accounted for 97.6% of total livestock slaughtered.

Conversely, in the year under review, poultry slaughter increased by 1.1% to 3,547.8 tonnes.

The decline in volume was mainly due to a sharp drop in tuna and similar species (-56.9%), alongside decreases in blue jack mackerel (-51.5%) and chub mackerel (-60.2%). In contrast, black scabbardfish landings increased by 8.5%.

Black scabbardfish was the most abundant species in 2024, totaling 2,299.5 tonnes (65.4% of total landings), followed by tuna and similar species at 885.9 tonnes (25.2%). In terms of first-sale revenue, black scabbardfish recorded a 14.7% increase from 2023, reaching 11.4 million euros, whereas tuna and similar species saw a sharp decline of 44.4%, totaling 3.5 million euros.

In 2024, the average first-sale fish price (excluding self-consumption) rose by 22.9% to 4.83 euros per kilogram (3.93 euros in 2023). Black scabbardfish averaged 5.05 euros/kg (4.79 euros in 2023), while tuna and similar species reached 4.01 euros/kg (3.10 euros in 2023).
