In the first nine months of 2024
Industrial poultry farming experienced growth compared to the same period last year, while livestock slaughtering and landed catch registered significant declines
According to information gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from industrial poultry farms in the Region, between January and September 2024, egg production reached approximately 24.1 million units, representing a year-on-year increase of 0.5%, while poultry meat grew 5.6% compared to the first nine months of the previous year, amounting 2,797.6 tonnes. From July to September, changes of -1.2% in egg production and +19.2% in poultry meat were recorded compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
In turn, according to data provided by the Slaughter Centre of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM), livestock slaughtering in the first three quarters of 2024, reflecting an 8.1% year-on-year decline. This decrease was driven by reductions in both cattle slaughter (-4.6%) and pig slaughter (-77.0%). For the third quarter alone, the year-on-year change in total livestock slaughter was -7.5%.
In the domain of fisheries, the information collected from the Regional Directorate for Fisheries, referring to the first nine months of 2024, shows that this period was marked by year-on-year declines in both the volume of landed fish (-28.2%) and the value of the first sale (-10.8%). In this period, the landed catch in the Region was around 2,986.2 tonnes, generating revenues from the first sale of 14.1 million euros.
Among the main species of fish landed, only black scabbardfish showed an increase compared to the first nine months of 2023 (+7.8%), with tuna and similar species (-56.7%), blue jack mackerel (-59.8%) and chub mackerel (-49.6%) contributed to the overall decline. In terms of value, the behaviour was identical to that of volume, with black scabbardfish growing by 14.5% whereas the other species recorded reductions of 44.2% in tuna and similar species, 11.2% in blue jack mackerel and 2.2% in chub mackerel. It should be noted that, in this period, 64.5% of the total value of the catches corresponded to black scabbardfish. In the 3rd quarter of 2024, the volume and value of fish landed decreased by 46.0% and 25.6% respectively, compared to the same period in 2023.
The average price of fish determined at the first sale for the period in reference (excluding in these calculations the fish landed for self-consumption) was 4.79 euros (3.84 euros in the same period of 2023), with the price average for tuna and similar species reaching 4.03 euros (3.12 euros in the same period of the previous year) and for black scabbardfish 5.05 euros (4.76 euros in the first nine months of the previous year).

Aquaculture production decreased by 2.3% in annual terms
According to information collected by DREM from aquaculture producing companies in the Region, between January and September 2024, 1,016.6 tonnes of sea bream were produced, -2.3% year-on-year. In turn, sales totalled 6.4 million euros, an increase of 5.6%.
Regarding market distribution, it is observed that 86.9% of the sales value was attributed to the national market (Mainland Portugal and the Azores), while only 13.0% was linked to the regional market.
In the 3rd quarter of 2024, production volume and sales value experienced year-on-year changes of -22.2% and -12.1%, respectively.
