In the first nine months of 2025

Banana sales decreased by 12.3% year-on-year

According to data provided by the Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Rural Development (DRA), between January and September 2025, a total of 16 492.1 tonnes of bananas were sold in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), representing a decrease of 2 321.3 tonnes compared with the same period of the previous year (-12.3%). Of this total, 82.1% was dispatched (84.5% in the same period of 2024), mainly to mainland Portugal.

Compared with the same period in 2024, the extra class and class I registered decreases of 13.6% and 11.6%, respectively, while the lower-grade (class II) bananas recorded an increase of 7.9%.

It should be noted that, during the reference period, the extra class accounted for 81.3% of the total volume of bananas sold, compared with 82.5% in the corresponding period of the previous year, representing a decline of 1.2 percentage points in its share.

During this period, July recorded the highest volume of banana sales (2 507.8 tonnes), while August and September registered the largest year-on-year decreases of the year (-26.5% and -29.1%, respectively). Conversely, July also stood out for showing the most significant increase in banana sales, with a rise of 12.9% compared with the same month of 2024.
